Frequently Asked Questions

Which ACTIVE UVHeat bulb do I need?

Most people use the floods, our bestall-around bulbs, the spots are usually only needed for long distanceapplications since the UV amount is much higher within this spot area only.
If the wattage of your current heat lamp is a near a 100 watt bulb then use our100 watt flood. If the heat output is less than this our 100 watt flood canstill be used if mounted slightly higher from the basking site. The same is truefor our higher wattage bulbs.

I have always been told you cannot get UVB from an incandescentbulb?

Correct, you cannot. Active UVHeat is a self-ballasted bulb, which allows it to be usedin an ordinary socket. The UVB and UVA are generated from a mercury vaporarc-tube and the heat comes from a heat filament, both of which are powered bythe internal self-ballast. So this is basically two bulbs built into one.

Can I not buy a mercury vapor lamp at any good industrial lamp store?

Yes, but they do not have the specialarc-tube that generates enough UV that is also not filtered out by the glass. They are made not to provide UV which for human use is not desirable.

Are these lamps like sun tanning lamps which are too strong or harmful?

No. They are actually very weak compared to everyday outdoorconditions. If you look at how much UVB the100 watt flood Active UVHeatgenerates at 12 " away, this amount is less than shade levels of reflectedUVB on a sunny summer day. You would get many more times the UVB intensity fromthe sun just by walking outside on an average day. See our section on "Howmuch UV light is needed for Reptiles".

What percentage UVB is produced by Active UVHeat ?

Zoo med advertises 5% and ESU Desert specifies 7% for their fluorescent tubes. Percentagesare not the proper way to compare different bulbs to each other. For example, anadult lizard has a head that is 5% of his total body weight, a baby could alsohave a head that is 5% of their body weight, but which has the bigger head? Theway to compare head size in this case is with weight. The same is true with UVBenergy, as measured in watts, or microwatts/cm2.

What is the difference between the spot and flood types?

There is a great difference. We almost alwaysrecommend the floods which are more like a typical heat lamp with an evendistribution of light and heat. The spot types are for long distance use only orfor isolating a basking site (like turtles on a rock in water). They have doublethe UV at double the distance but in a discreet spot focus area only- this isthe only way to get significant UV amounts at a distance safely without any UVelsewhere. A very effective bulb at 24"-36" for the 100 watt spot and for the 160 watt spot. We only recommend the spot type forthis kind of use.
