TRUE RED TOMATO FROGS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 8 YEARS -Dyscophus antongilli

We have been breeding tomato frogs and 15 other species of tropical frogs since 1989.

Our first breeding adventure began in a college apartment closet with noisy Whites tree frogs, without the use of hormones. This led to obtaining some of the first group of the common tomato frog Dyscophus guineti ever brought in from Madagascar by Ron Tremper.

We refined the use of hormonal induction for the breeding of this family of tomato frogs over the next 4 years. In 1993 the zoo collections of the true red tomato frog were drastically dwindling. These collections were derived from the original pre-import ban group of animals.  Private collections of this fine animal derived from the past Ernie Wagner and Phillipe Des Voljili breeding efforts were also nearly non-existent. This condition lead to a collaborative breeding loan to UC Berkeley thanks to efforts of Michael Hicks who controlled the zoo studbook at the Baltimore zoo and 2 private collectors.

I was the supervisor of a large reptile facility at the University and with the support of their veterinarian Dr. Dale De Nardo the loan took place. It was here using the breeding strategies I developed earlier on the commonly available species, that I was able to induce 2 small spawns of the Dyscophus antongilli . The true tomato frogs we have here today are the fruits of this 11 year effort, in which we are the only private breeders in the country. -Joe Hoegeman of Wild Inside 8/5/00

These butterscotch (soon to be pink, then red) babies being offered to qualified individuals are appendix II listed, and legal to sell interstate with no paperwork needed because they are captive bred. They are currently 1.5 inches long and 1.5 months old.

We also carry other captive-bred amphibians either from our facility or fromother breeders and select reptiles of high quality and value.
